Hokuto Hoshi is the director of the Hoshi General Hospital in Koriyama, as well as the Chairman of the Fukushima Prefecture Hospital Council. When he was young, he studied very close to the location where he currently works, although he lived away for 5 years before returning to settle in Fukushima prefecture. When the terrible Tohoku earthquake occurred, Hoshi-san was in Barcelona where it was difficult for him to obtain reliable information. He thinks that he got unverified information earlier than the official responses from the Government of Japan. According to Hoshi-san it is important to verify everything correctly before reporting, but he thinks that it took a long time to get that information to the population. His wife and daughter moved to Tokyo after the event in 2011, as it was previously planned that his daughter would start college there, although they stayed in Tokyo a few more months for safety. He, however, continued in Koriyama due to his work and the responsibility that came with it.
The hospital where he currently works accelerated its construction due to the earthquake, although its construction was already planned in advance. For a time he was giving talks about thyroid cancer to the population, so the people would have first-hand information from healthcare. He believes in honesty with the people, telling them what is happening, because if you are better informed you will act better. This thought is due to the fact that there are cases in schools where if a kid comes from an area that was affected by radiation, their classmates stigmatize them and tell lies (also due to the fraudulent demand for aid by a small percentage of the affected).
He thinks that it will not be possible to live in the exclusion zone again, but despite all this he believes that they cannot stay in the past and be eternally regretting. They must look ahead and live day by day, hoping for a better future.
